A bumper harvest of Totapuri mangoes this season led to a sharp fall in prices across markets in Karnataka, putting thousands of farmers under financial stress. Responding to this crisis, the central and Karnataka state governments have agreed to provide price support under the Market Intervention Scheme (MIS) for up to 2.5 lakh tonnes of Totapuri mangoes. The fixed procurement price has been set at ₹1,616 per quintal.

As per the official notification issued by the Union Ministry of Agriculture on June 21, this Market Intervention Price (MIP) applies to the 2025–26 marketing year. The announcement comes as a major relief to farmers in rain-fed and horticulture-dependent regions of the state.

Totapuri mango growers had been facing severe losses and had made several appeals to both the state and central governments seeking minimum price support. Initially, there was no clear response from the Centre.

The breakthrough came when Union Minister and former Karnataka Chief Minister H. D. Kumaraswamy directly wrote to Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, drawing attention to the sharp price crash. Following this intervention, the central government finally announced the support price decision.

The implementation of the scheme will be a joint effort between the central and state governments. While details regarding the Centre’s financial share are yet to be revealed, the Karnataka government has promised to take full responsibility in ensuring price stability and fair compensation for farmers.

The announcement is expected to help mango growers secure a reasonable return for their produce and protect them from market exploitation. It is also likely to contribute to long-term sustainability in the horticulture sector.
