New Delhi: In a bid to promote eco-friendly mobility solutions, the Indian Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has proposed the introduction of a distinct registration plate for hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. The move aims to make these vehicles easily recognizable to both the public and enforcement agencies.

This initiative is inspired by similar models already implemented in countries like the UK, Ireland, and Australia, where zero-emission or eco-friendly vehicles feature uniquely designed license plates.

✅ Key Features of the Proposed Hydrogen Number Plate:

A green-colored band accompanied by yellow or blue markings for easy identification.

Enables authorities and citizens to spot hydrogen-powered vehicles quickly.

May offer future incentives such as toll exemptions, free parking, or priority access to certain roads.

📢 Official Statement:

“A special number plate for hydrogen vehicles will help raise awareness and acceptance of clean energy technology. It represents a forward-thinking step in our battle against pollution,” said a senior official from the Ministry.

🌍 Global Precedents:

UK: Green band plates introduced in 2020.

Ireland: Green flash plates from 2025.

Australia: ‘H’ label for hydrogen vehicles.

🚗 Hydrogen Vehicles in India – Status Update:

Although hydrogen vehicles are not yet available for commercial sale in India, several pilot projects are underway:

The Government of India, in collaboration with Toyota, has launched a pilot project to study the performance of the Toyota Mirai, a hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV).

Hyundai is also expected to bring its hydrogen-powered vehicles to the Indian market soon, according to industry experts.
