In the first core committee meeting chaired by Sukhbir Singh Badal after being re-elected as the SAD (Shiromani Akali Dal) president, a major decision has been taken. The meeting, held on Monday, approved the move to renew the alliance with the BJP. However, the committee clarified that any new alliance must not compromise Akali Dal’s core principles.
In September 2020, the SAD had exited the NDA alliance after opposing the three controversial farm laws, which were seen as anti-farmer. In protest, Sukhbir Badal’s wife and MP, Harsimrat Kaur Badal, had resigned from the Union Cabinet. Following this, SAD severed all political ties with the NDA.
Now, looking ahead to the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections, the party is reconsidering its stance and exploring a renewed alliance with the BJP. The core committee’s decision marks a potential new direction for the party’s political journey. During the meeting, senior leaders demanded clarity on whether the party should form alliances with rebel groups or saffron parties for the upcoming elections.
While making this decision, the core committee emphasized the importance of upholding the party’s founding ideologies. Even if the alliance is revived, the SAD will continue to fight for its ideals, religious values, and rural rights, as firmly stated during the session.
