China’s covert move disrupts iPhone production in India: Foxconn recalls over 300 Chinese engineers!

Foxconn has withdrawn more than 300 Chinese engineers from its Indian operations, delivering a setback to Apple’s local manufacturing push.

Once again, China has flexed its disruptive influence on India’s strategic ambitions. Just as Apple gears up for iPhone 17 production in India, its key manufacturing partner Foxconn has suddenly pulled back over 300 Chinese engineers working on Indian projects.

Foxconn, which is setting up a new iPhone assembly unit in southern India, has now recalled its experienced Chinese workforce at a critical early phase of the project. This move is expected to affect not only the pace of operations but also the technical finesse required at this scale of production.

The engineers’ recall is seen as a consequence of China’s silent policy of restricting skilled manpower from contributing to rival countries’ tech ecosystems. This includes curbs on tech transfers, machinery expertise, and hands-on support—elements crucial to Apple’s precision manufacturing standards.

Apple CEO Tim Cook has repeatedly credited Chinese engineers for their meticulous skill set and excellence in precision assembly—skills not easily replicated. Without their support, India’s manufacturing ecosystem faces a steep learning curve in meeting Apple’s global standards.

This sudden gap in skilled labor presents a new challenge to India’s tech manufacturing dream and highlights the growing geopolitical tug-of-war over global supply chains.
