A street-side kebab vendor has received a major shock from the Income Tax Department after being served a notice demanding tax on his past transactions. According to reports, the vendor's UPI transactions amounted to a staggering ₹6 crore, prompting officials to issue a tax notice of ₹20 lakh.
The kebab stall owner, who operates from the roadside, is now questioning whether accepting digital payments from customers was a mistake. He has shared his concerns with the media, expressing that the situation feels deeply unfair.
In total, over 10,000 street vendors have reportedly received similar tax notices. Tax authorities were reportedly stunned by the volume of digital transactions from the humble kebab stall and have instructed the vendor to provide a detailed tax explanation. The vendor has been asked to pay ₹20 lakh as tax on the income.
The Income Tax Department has also conducted raids on several small shops and roadside vendors, especially those accepting UPI payments. Since the transaction amounts were directly credited to SBI bank accounts, the department has used this digital trail to assess the tax dues.
Hearing the massive tax amounts they are now liable to pay, many small vendors have been left shocked and anxious.
