The Gambhira Bridge, also known as Gambhira Setu, was inaugurated in 1984–85 by then Gujarat Chief Minister Madhavsinh Solanki. Construction began in the early 1980s and was opened for public transport by 1985. The bridge connects Vadodara and Anand districts with the Saurashtra region, crossing over the Mahisagar River, and has served as a key trade and transport route in central Gujarat.

Initial investigations indicate that rusted steel cables and aged iron rods, which were previously used, had been welded with new materials — possibly compromising the structural integrity. The deterioration due to rust has been cited as the primary reason for the collapse.
