Along with the inauguration, Tesla has announced the on-road price of its much-awaited Model Y, which is set at ₹61 lakh. The rear-wheel drive variant will be available at a cash price of ₹59.89 lakh, as per the company’s announcement. Earlier this month, Tesla teased its India debut on its India-focused X (formerly Twitter) handle with a “Coming soon” post, confirming its entry in July 2025.

This development signals Tesla’s first step into the growing Indian electric vehicle (EV) market, which is gaining momentum due to rising environmental awareness and government incentives.

At the inauguration, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis welcomed the company with enthusiasm, stating, “This is not just the opening of an experience centre. It marks Tesla’s arrival and that too, in the right city and the right state, Mumbai, Maharashtra. Tesla is not just a car or a car company, it stands for innovation and sustainability.”

Despite speculations about Tesla setting up manufacturing in India, Union Minister for Heavy Industries H.D. Kumaraswamy recently clarified that the company has no current plans to establish production units in the country. “They only want to sell their cars in India,” he said.

Tesla’s entry could serve as a major catalyst for the Indian EV ecosystem, setting the stage for increased competition and greater consumer awareness.
