Kanwar Yatra: Supreme Court Seeks State Reply on QR Code Stickers for Food Vendors - What Is the Kanwar Yatra?

SC gives one week to Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand governments to respond over QR code mandate for vendors.

The Supreme Court of India has granted one week's time to the state governments of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand to file their responses regarding a petition challenging the government directive that mandates food vendors along the Kanwar Yatra route to display QR code stickers on their banners.Handcuffs Backpacks Vegan Leather Casual Backpack Multipurpose Travelling Bags Daypacks For Men And Women

While the stated intent behind the QR codes is to allow pilgrims (Kanwariyas) to access vendor details quickly, the move has raised legal concerns about privacy, discrimination, and targeted profiling. During the hearing, the Court directed the two state governments to submit their replies within seven days. A further hearing will be scheduled after these responses are received.

What Is the Kanwar Yatra?

The Kanwar Yatra is an annual pilgrimage dedicated to Lord Shiva, undertaken mostly in the Hindu month of Shravan (July–August). During this time, devotees — called Kanwariyas — travel to the Ganga River, collect holy water, and carry it back in special containers to perform Jalabhishek on Shivlings in their local temples.

The "Kanwar" refers to a bamboo pole with pots tied at each end, carried on the shoulders. The pilgrimage has mythological roots in the story of the Samudra Manthan, where Lord Shiva consumed deadly poison. It is believed that offering Ganga water helps soothe Shiva after this event. Participants often walk barefoot for long distances, with some even completing the yatra while lying prostrate at intervals. During the journey, many devotees also abstain from meat, and some avoid food containing onion and garlic, observing deep austerity and devotion.
