On July 11, 2006, seven first-class coaches of Mumbai’s Western Railway suburban trains were rocked by seven explosions, resulting in 189 deaths and over 824 injuries. The Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) investigated the case, and in 2015, a special MCOCA (Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act) court convicted 12 of the 13 accused. Five were sentenced to death, and seven received life imprisonment. One accused, Wahid Sheikh, was acquitted in 2015 after nine years in jail. Another accused, Kamal Ansari, died in jail in 2021 due to Covid-19.
