Flood Havoc in Uttar Pradesh: Sarayu and Ghaghra Rivers Exceed Danger Levels, Submerging Villages and Destroying Crops

In Gonda’s Tarabganj and Karnalganj tehsils, the Ghaghra and Sarayu rivers have surpassed danger levels, submerging 12 villages.

Heavy rainfall and a significant rise in the water levels of the Sarayu and other rivers have caused severe flooding across multiple districts in Uttar Pradesh. Villages have been inundated, crops destroyed, and thousands of people are facing distress.

  1. Basti District:
In Basti’s Vikramjot, the Sarayu River’s intense flow has eroded 43 villages since 1971. Currently, seven villages—Kalyapur, Bharatapur, Padav, Chandapur, Sandalpur, Kanhaipur, and Khemrajpur—are at high risk.
Villagers are dismantling their homes and relocating to safer areas, staying vigilant day and night to monitor the river’s fluctuations.

  2. Gonda District:
In Gonda’s Tarabganj and Karnalganj tehsils, the Ghaghra and Sarayu rivers have surpassed danger levels, submerging 12 villages.
Approximately 10,000 people have been affected, with 42 boats deployed for transportation and rescue efforts.

  3. Varanasi Situation:
The rising waters of the Ganga, Varuna, Gomti, and Nand rivers have flooded 54 villages in Varanasi. Twenty-four urban wards and several residential areas are underwater.
Crops such as vegetables, pulses, and paddy fields have been destroyed, and livestock face shortages of fodder and drinking water.
Boats and temporary shelters have been arranged for rescue operations, but flooded roads are delaying relief efforts.

  4. Agra and Hamirpur:
In Agra, the Chambal River has exceeded the danger level by 4 meters, submerging 12 villages. Around 200 families have been safely relocated.
In Hamirpur, the Yamuna and Betwa rivers have crossed danger levels, flooding several villages and parts of the town.

  5. Prayagraj:
The Ganga and Yamuna rivers have exceeded danger levels, affecting over 200 villages and 60 urban neighborhoods.
In the Karela Bagh area, the overflow of the Sasur Khaderi River has forced residents to wade through knee-deep water.

  6. Gorakhpur:
The Rapti and Sarayu rivers have surpassed danger levels, partially or fully submerging 45 villages. However, there are indications that the Rapti River’s water levels may be receding.

  7. Crop Destruction:
The overflow of the Ganga, Yamuna, and Sarayu rivers has completely destroyed vegetables, pulses, and paddy crops. Farmers, unable to save their fields, have suffered significant losses.

Relief Operations:
NDRF, SDRF, and PAC teams are actively engaged in rescue operations, evacuating people to safer locations.
Boats and motorboats are being used for transportation in severely flooded areas.
