The launch of Bengaluru’s Yellow Line Metro on August 10, 2025, has catapulted Namma Metro’s daily passenger count beyond the historic 10-lakh milestone, marking a transformative moment for the city’s public transportation system. On August 11, 2025, a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 19.15-km Yellow Line from RV Road to Bommasandra, the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) recorded an impressive 10,48,031 passengers across its three operational lines Purple, Green, and Yellow.

This surge highlights the Yellow Line’s pivotal role in easing chronic traffic congestion in South Bengaluru, particularly in high-traffic areas like Electronics City and Silk Board Junction. With the metro network now spanning 96 km, BMRCL projects that daily ridership could soon reach 12.5 lakh, heralding a new era of urban mobility in India’s tech hub.
Constructed at a cost of ₹7,160 crore, the fully elevated 19.15-km Yellow Line has proven to be a game-changer. On its first day of commercial operations, it served 52,215 passengers, surpassing BMRCL’s initial projections of 25,000–30,000 riders. The Purple Line saw 4,51,816 commuters, the Green Line carried 2,91,677, and interchange stations like RV Road and Majestic handled 2,52,323 passengers.
This figure eclipses the previous record of 9,66,732 passengers set on June 4, 2025, during Royal Challengers Bangalore celebrations, making it the highest single-day ridership in Namma Metro’s history.

The Yellow Line connects vital residential, commercial, and IT hubs, including BTM Layout, Jayadeva Hospital, and Bommasandra, providing critical relief to commuters battling Bengaluru’s notorious traffic. Despite operating with only three train sets at 25-minute intervals, the line has attracted significant crowds, raising concerns about overcrowding at RV Road, the interchange station linking the Green and Yellow Lines.
Passengers have reported longer wait times and platform congestion, but BMRCL is addressing these issues by planning to add a fourth train set by the end of August, reducing intervals to 20 minutes. Additionally, the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) introduced feeder bus services on August 12, 2025, with 12 buses operating 100 daily trips along Hosur Road to improve last-mile connectivity.

The Yellow Line’s success underscores Bengaluru’s growing dependence on public transport to combat urban congestion. BMRCL’s confidence in reaching 12.5 lakh daily passengers is supported by the line’s strategic route, catering to an estimated eight lakh commuters in South Bengaluru. The planned Phase 3 expansion, covering 44 km with 31 stations, promises a robust future for Namma Metro.
However, challenges such as limited train frequency and overcrowding must be addressed to maintain this momentum. The Yellow Line’s launch not only represents a significant infrastructure achievement but also reinforces Bengaluru’s commitment to sustainable urban mobility, setting a model for other Indian cities.
