The strict ban on old vehicles was implemented to combat air pollution in Delhi. The transport department, Delhi Police, and traffic staff had coordinated a strategy to monitor and enforce the prohibition on the movement of diesel vehicles older than 10 years and petrol vehicles older than 15 years.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta and Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati, representing the Delhi government, appealed to a three-judge bench headed by CJI B. R. Gavai.
