Jharkhand- In a significant ruling, the Jharkhand High Court has addressed a case involving the suicide of a Dalit student at Birla Institute of Technology (BIT), Mesra, Ranchi, in 2022. The student, Indrakumar Meghwal, allegedly took his life due to caste-based discrimination and harassment faced at the institute. Case Background:
Indrakumar Meghwal was an engineering student at BIT Mesra. According to his family’s allegations, he faced caste-based harassment and discrimination from certain faculty members and staff at the institute. This persistent harassment led to severe mental distress, ultimately resulting in his suicide in 2022.

The incident highlighted the serious issue of caste-based discrimination in educational institutions. The family held the institute accountable and sought legal recourse.Jharkhand High Court’s Order:


After hearing the case, the Jharkhand High Court issued a stern verdict against BIT Mesra, with the following directives:

  1. Compensation: BIT Mesra must pay ₹20 lakh as compensation to the family of the deceased student, Indrakumar Meghwal.
