Bengaluru: Snake catchers and wildlife rescuers from across the state have launched a major protest at Freedom Park today to press for their various demands. Protesters, who reject the label of "snake charmers," are urging the government to recognize them as wildlife protectors and provide them with proper support.
In a scathing criticism of the government, protesters questioned, "You spend 8 to 10 crore rupees on feeding biryani to stray dogs, but you don't see the lakhs of wildlife protectors?" They have put forward a list of demands to the government:
Provide compensation to the families of snake and wildlife rescuers who die in the line of duty.
Cover the medical expenses of rescuers who are injured during rescue operations.
Offer compensation to the families of rescuers attacked by wildlife.
Establish a scheme to provide a monthly honorarium to wildlife protectors.
Provide official training, skill development, and necessary equipment to snake and wildlife rescuers.
Arrange for life insurance and health insurance for all rescuers.
Issue licenses and identification cards to rescuers through the relevant department.
Establish an emergency fund for wildlife protectors.
The protesters also expressed their anger over the Forest Department's negligence. "We have not been given a single snake-catching stick or a pair of boots by the department. The law treats killing a tiger the same as killing a snake. Yet, we, who risk our lives to save snakes, have no protection," they stated, highlighting their lack of safety and official recognition. This protest is a significant effort to bring their long-standing demands to the government's attention.
