The new iPhone 17 from Apple has started production in India. Taiwanese contract manufacturer Foxconn has begun assembling the iPhone 17 at its new facility in Devanahalli, Bengaluru. This unit is Foxconn's second-largest outside of China, involving an investment of 2.8 billion USD. Local and international engineers are working to install the technology at this plant.
Foxconn's Chennai facility is also producing the iPhone 17, as Apple expands its supply chain in India. Apple's production in India has grown significantly over the last two years. In the fiscal year ending in March 2025, an estimated $22 billion USD worth of iPhones were assembled, a 60% increase from the previous year.
Apple's CEO, Tim Cook, recently stated that most iPhones sold in the US during the June 2025 quarter were shipped from India. Reports suggest that total iPhone production this year will rise to about 60 million units, compared to 35-40 million units last year. Exports from India to the US and other regions are also expected to increase.
Apple's sales in India are showing steady growth. In the first half of 2025, iPhone shipments increased by 21% to 5.9 million units. The iPhone 16 sold well in the June quarter. However, Apple's share of the Indian smartphone market is 7.5%, which lags behind some major brands.
Apple is ready to officially launch the iPhone 17 in September. The official release is expected on September 9, with pre-orders from the 12th. The iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Air, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max will be available in various markets, including India, from the 19th. The stable version of iOS 26 for older models is likely to be released on September 16.
