Bengaluru, August 20, 2025 – Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is set to announce the implementation of internal reservations for the 101 sub-castes within the Scheduled Castes (SC) community in the Karnataka Assembly today. This follows a special cabinet meeting held on Tuesday night to discuss the 1,766-page report submitted by the Justice H.N. Nagamohan Das Commission, which recommends internal reservations for SCs based on empirical data collected via a mobile application.

Key Points:Cabinet Consensus: The cabinet reached a consensus on the quota for internal reservations within the SC community. Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs H.K. Celebrations and Protests: Post-meeting, a group led by former Minister Anjaneya felicitated CM Siddaramaiah with garlands and sweets at Vidhana Soudha. However, members of the Alemari community protested, alleging their inclusion in a category with only a 5% reservation, indicating dissatisfaction with the allocation.

Background: The push for internal reservations dates back to the tenure of former CM SM Krishna, with earlier efforts by the Congress-JDS alliance under CM Dharam Singh in 2005, which formed the AG Sadashiva Commission. In 2012, the Sadashiva Commission recommended a split of the 15% SC reservation: 6% for the "left hand," 5.5% for the "right hand," 3% for untouchable sub-castes, and 1% for others. The current decision aligns with a Supreme Court ruling empowering states to determine internal reservations based on empirical data.
