The central government introduced three bills in the Lok Sabha yesterday, facing strong opposition and criticism from opposition parties. P. Chidambaram, a senior Congress leader and Member of Parliament, has reacted with sharp disapproval to the bills, which relate to the potential removal of the Prime Minister, Chief Ministers, and ministers if they are sentenced to 30 days of imprisonment.
He stated that these newly proposed bills will weaken constitutional principles and the federal system, triggering intense protests from the opposition. He also expressed concern about the erosion of democratic standards.
Taking to his X (formerly Twitter) account, he lambasted the Narendra Modi-led government, calling these methods legally strange, unconstitutional, and an extraordinary process. Meanwhile, tensions among the opposition have escalated, and more varied stances on this issue are expected to emerge.
