In 1983, under the influence of Christian missionaries, tulasi katta (sacred basil platforms) were destroyed and replaced with crosses. The Dharmasthala Trust ensured that no one converted to another religion and reinstated tulasi plants in front of every household.
The Dharmasthala Trust has significantly improved the economic conditions of many people.

Context and Investigation Update: The allegations stem from claims by C.N. Chinnayya, who accused Dharmasthala of burying hundreds of bodies without post-mortems between 1995 and 2014. The SIT investigation found no substantial evidence, except for one skeleton currently under forensic analysis. Chinnayya, arrested on August 23, 2025, confessed to fabricating the allegations as part of a conspiracy, allegedly guided by a “prominent individual” in Delhi. The SIT is now probing the involvement of others, including possible political motives, with Giliyar’s statement adding fuel to speculations about Congress MP Shashikanth Senthil’s role. The investigation continues, with calls for an NIA probe growing stronger.
