The National Zoological Park in Delhi (Delhi Zoo) has been temporarily closed as a precautionary measure following the detection of H5N1 Avian Influenza (Bird Flu) in two samples. An official notice confirms that the zoo has been shut since August 30, 2025, to prevent any risk to public health.
What is H5N1?
H5N1 is a subtype of Influenza A virus primarily affecting poultry such as chickens, turkeys, ducks, and wild birds. While rare, it can transmit to humans, though human-to-human transmission is not common.
Symptoms in Birds:
Paralysis of wings
Blue discoloration of combs
Hemorrhagic spots on legs
Discharge from eyes and nose
Respiratory distress
Symptoms in Humans:
Fever
Cough
Sore throat
Body aches
Breathing difficulties
In rare cases, severe respiratory issues that can be fatal.
To safeguard public health, the zoo has implemented strict infection control measures, and additional samples have been sent for testing. The closure will remain in effect from August 30, 2025, until further notice.
Karnataka: Due to reported H5N1 cases in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, the Karnataka Health Department is on high alert in border districts.
Kerala: H5N1 has been detected in Alappuzha, prompting stringent measures along the Tamil Nadu border.
Uttarakhand: Two districts have confirmed H5N1 cases, and public advisories have been issued.
