Jalalabad: A 6.0 magnitude earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan’s Nangarhar and Kunar provinces at 11:47 PM on September 1, 2025, resulting in at least 20 deaths and over 115 injuries. Entire villages have been destroyed, with fears that hundreds more may have perished, according to Taliban government officials.

The earthquake, centered 27 km from Jalalabad at a shallow depth of 8 km, caused severe destruction. Two aftershocks of magnitudes 4.5 and 5.2 further triggered landslides, obstructing roads and complicating rescue operations. In Nangarhar’s Darai Nur district, nine people died, and 30 were injured, including two children killed by a collapsing roof.
