A massive earthquake in eastern Afghanistan has resulted in hundreds of deaths and over 2,500 injuries, according to a Taliban government spokesperson. Reports confirm at least 800 fatalities from the disaster.The United Nations expressed deep sorrow over the situation in Afghanistan. In a statement on X, the UN noted that its teams are already on the ground, providing emergency assistance and life-saving support.
“Our thoughts are with the affected communities,” the statement added.India has extended its support and condolences. In a post on X, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed profound grief over the loss of lives caused by the earthquake. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the deceased, and we wish for a speedy recovery for the injured,” he wrote.
He further stated that India is ready to provide all possible humanitarian aid and relief to those affected.External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar also conveyed solidarity with the people of Afghanistan. “India will provide assistance during this time of need. Our condolences to the families of the deceased, and our prayers for the swift recovery of the injured,” he said.
