New Dehli: The 56th GST Council meeting, which began today at Vigyan Bhavan, has sparked hope for a significant tax overhaul that could lead to price reductions on several consumer goods. The two-day meeting, chaired by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, is being attended by finance ministers from all states and the central government.
Many are calling this meeting "Modi's Diwali gift," following Prime Minister Narendra Modi's August 15 announcement from the Red Fort that a "new generation of GST reforms" would be implemented before the festival.
Key Reforms and Potential Price Cuts -
The primary focus of the meeting is a proposal to simplify the existing four-tier GST slab structure of 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28%. The council is reportedly discussing the possibility of merging the 12% and 28% slabs into the 5% and 18% categories.
If approved, this change could lower the prices of a wide range of products. Items like toothpaste, shampoo, talcum powder, and soap, currently taxed at 18%, could see their rates reduced to 5%. Dairy products like butter, cheese, and ghee are also expected to move to a lower tax bracket.
The council is also considering reducing GST on electronics such as refrigerators, televisions, and air conditioners. Furthermore, there's a possibility of a tax cut on small cars, moving them from the 28% to the 18% slab, which would benefit companies like Maruti Suzuki. However, a new 40% "sin goods" slab is being considered for items like liquor, tobacco, and luxury vehicles, including high-end electric cars from manufacturers like Tesla and BYD.
Ease of Business and Political Support -
The meeting also aims to simplify GST registration and filing for small businesses, a move that would ease compliance and help them manage their operations more effectively. Also Read: Punjab Reels Under Worst Floods Since 1988: Over 1,400 Villages Submerged, Massive Devastation Reported..!

BJP MP Praveen Khandelwal described the proposed changes as a "next-generation GST reform" led by PM Modi, stating that a simplified and transparent system would benefit both traders and consumers.
