Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya, who has been advocating for a reduction in metro fares, has expressed doubts about whether the state government possesses the Metro Fare Fixation Report. Despite multiple requests for the report, BMRCL officials have only provided evasive responses. Although the metro is a partnership between the central and state governments, the state government has full authority over fare fixation. Surya alleged that the state government is wrongly blaming the central government on this issue.
Two days ago, a court hearing was held regarding the metro fare hike issue. The state government submitted an affidavit stating that it would publish the Fare Fixation Report. However, it has not been published yet. The final hearing is scheduled for September 22. If the government publishes the report by then, it may avoid trouble. Otherwise, it risks facing a reprimand from the court.Regarding the metro fare hike, I had approached the court.
The state government submitted an affidavit to the court. In Delhi Metro, fares were increased by 2-3 rupees, but here, the hike is 20 rupees. The metro fare increase is solely the state government's decision. They claimed to have conducted a study in other countries and submitted a report based on it. Tejasvi Surya questioned what exactly they studied in those countries, expressing curiosity about the details.
Doubts have emerged about whether the state government possesses the fare fixation report. If the report exists, why hasn’t it been made public? BMRCL has written to the state government seeking permission to publish the fare fixation report. The state government had instructed in July to publish it online. Now, in September, it remains to be seen if BMRCL will act on the government’s letter and release the report. If not, during the next court hearing on September 22, they may face criticism and be compelled to make the fare fixation report public.
