During a press conference, BJP state president B.Y. Vijayendra questioned the Congress government and the Chief Minister, stating, "You have invited Booker Prize winner Banu Mushtaq to inaugurate Dasara. Did it not occur to you to also invite another accomplished woman, Deepa Basti?" Several BJP leaders have accused the Karnataka Congress government of indulging in "appeasement politics" by inviting Banu Mushtaq.
