Bengaluru: The recent GST rate cuts by the Central Government could result in a loss of nearly ₹70,000 crore for Karnataka, said State Home Minister Dr. G. Parameshwara. Speaking to reporters, he welcomed the move, stating that reducing GST on certain essential commodities to 0% or 5% is a positive development. He emphasized that items used commonly by the public should either have no GST or a very minimal rate. “Unfortunately, higher GST rates were being imposed even on such basic necessities, which caused difficulties for the common man. It seems the central government has finally understood the hardships faced by the people. Dr. Parameshwara welcomed the recent decision by the central government to simplify GST but pointed out that tax reductions often lead to revenue loss. “Like the Centre, states too will face losses. Alternative sources of revenue need to be identified. Additionally, the central government must ensure fair allocation of grants to states and keep unnecessary expenditures in check,” he added.
