Onam commemorates the legendary demon king Mahabali, known for his just and benevolent rule. According to mythology, Lord Vishnu, in his Vamana avatar, visited Earth to test Mahabali. It is believed that Kerala prospered during Mahabali’s reign, and on Onam, he returns to check on the well-being of his people. The festival symbolizes Kerala's cultural richness, unity, and joy.

Onam is a significant harvest festival celebrated by the Malayali community in Kerala and worldwide. This 10-day festival reflects the cultural, religious, and social traditions of Kerala. In 2025, Onam will commence on August 26 and conclude on September 5 (Friday), with the final day known as Thiruvonam.

Pookalam: A key highlight of Onam is the Pookalam (floral rangoli). People create intricate designs with colorful flowers in their courtyards to welcome King Mahabali.

Traditional Attire: On Onam, people wear traditional outfits like the Kasavu saree (white saree with golden borders) and mundu, showcasing Kerala's cultural beauty.

Onam Sadhya: Another major aspect is the Onam Sadhya, a grand traditional feast featuring 20–30 dishes served on banana leaves, prepared in Kerala's authentic culinary style.

Cultural Programs: Onam features vibrant cultural events like Kaikottikali and Thumbi Thullal dances, Vallamkali (boat races), and Pulikali (tiger dance), which entertain and engage the community.
