New Delhi, September 7, 2025: The Central Government has sanctioned 5,250 new electric buses for Karnataka under the PM E-Drive scheme, aiming to make the state’s transport system eco-friendly and promote sustainability. This includes 4,850 standard electric buses and 400 air-conditioned (AC) electric buses, which will be deployed across various cities in the state in a phased manner.

Under the PM E-Drive and E-Bus schemes, the Centre has approved 5,250 electric buses for Karnataka, with 4,500 allocated to the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) through subsidies to alleviate traffic congestion in Bengaluru. Additionally, under the PM E-Bus Sewa scheme, 750 electric buses have been approved, with 350 allocated to the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC), 200 to the North Western Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (NWKSRTC), and 200 to the Kalyana Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (KKRTC).

Objectives: Reduce carbon emissions from diesel/petrol buses.

Minimize noise pollution.

Implementation: BMTC already operates over 1,400 electric buses, and with the addition of 4,500 new buses, the total fleet will exceed 5,700.

KKRTC will receive 200 buses for operation in Kalaburagi, Ballari, and Vijayapura.

NWKSRTC will also receive 200 buses to enhance its fleet.

Funding:The Central Government will provide 60% financial assistance for bus procurement, charging infrastructure, and driver recruitment, while the state government will cover 40% for civil works. The Centre will also bear the electricity costs.
