Following the communal clash and stone-pelting incident during the Ganesha idol immersion procession in Maddur town, Mandya district, on September 7, 2025, Hindu organizations, along with the BJP and their ally JD(S), called for a voluntary bandh on September 9, 2025. This bandh is being observed to condemn the violence, in which at least 8 people were injured and 21 individuals arrested.
Shops and businesses, except for essential services, have been shut down.
Main roads are deserted. Over 1,000 police personnel have been deployed to prevent unrest, with heightened security measures in place. Prohibitory orders under Section 144 have been enforced until the morning of September 10, and liquor sales have been banned. Consequently, Maddur currently resembles a ghost town shrouded in smoke.
The BJP and JD(S) have accused the Congress government of being "anti-Hindu" and failing to take strict action against the culprits.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah issued a statement saying that 21 people have been arrested, and action will be taken against those responsible, regardless of their community.
The report from District Minister Chaluvarayaswamy will provide guidance for further actions. BJP leaders, including R. Ashoka, have voiced support for the Hindu community and demanded that the government take action against the rioters.
No reports of any disturbances from Hindu leaders or organizations during Eid Milad-un-Nabi have surfaced. However, the acts committed during the Ganeshotsava have sparked widespread discussion across Karnataka.
