Director Anuparna Roy, the first Indian woman and fifth Indian filmmaker to win an award at the Venice Film Festival, has found herself at the center of a controversy. She won the Best Director award for her film "Songs of Forgotten Trees," but her acceptance speech, where she commented on the Palestine issue, has sparked a heated debate.

In her speech at the 82nd Venice Film Festival, she stated, "What is happening in Palestine is a crime, an injustice. Every child has the right to live in peace and freedom, and Palestine is no exception. This is our moral responsibility, and standing against injustice does not make me any less of an Indian." Her comments were seen as a direct response to her social media critics.

While her historic win, which she dedicated to all women, and her heartfelt speech garnered widespread attention, her remarks on Palestine have triggered a strong backlash. Some have speculated that her statement was influenced by filmmaker Anurag Kashyap.

However, Roy has put an end to such speculation, revealing that Kashyap had, in fact, strictly advised her not to talk about the issue. She said her parents, while concerned, have also supported her stance.
