In 2019, Vasikaran was rescued from the Bellary forest area. The bear had been caught in a poacher’s trap, fighting for its life, and suffered a broken hind left leg, causing immense distress. It was brought to the Bannerghatta Bear Rescue Centre, where treatment led to an improvement in its health.
The bear had adapted to walking on three legs, but during a visit to Bannerghatta, global animal orthopedics expert Dr. Derrick Campana from the United States observed Vasikaran’s movement. Recognizing the bear’s struggle to dig soil, climb trees, and forage, Dr. Campana designed and fitted an artificial limb. With the prosthetic leg, Vasikaran can now move as it did before, a moment that filled the operation team with joy and pride as they witnessed the bear’s recovery.
