Indian athlete Neeraj Chopra delivered a subdued performance at the World Javelin Championship in Tokyo. He finished in eighth place after being eliminated in the fifth round of the final, marking his first time finishing outside the top three in seven years. His performance was reportedly hampered by an unexpected fitness and health issue, preventing him from securing a medal.
Since 2018, Chopra has consistently won gold or silver medals in all major tournaments, including the Commonwealth Games, World Championships, and the Olympics. The javelin star, who won a historic gold medal in 2021, had hoped for another championship victory on the same Tokyo track, but his hopes were dashed. After the competition, an emotional Chopra revealed that he had been suffering from a backache for the past two weeks but had not disclosed it to maintain confidence for the event. He expressed his confusion about what went wrong in the qualifying round, stating, "This has never happened before."
In a post on his X account (formerly Twitter), he wrote, "I did not want to end the championship like this. I wanted to give my best performance, but I couldn't." Also Read: Sam Pitroda's Controversial Remark: 'Pakistan Felt Like Home'
