The issue of Christian castes in Karnataka’s caste survey has escalated into a major controversy. The social and economic survey, which includes a list of 46 Christian castes, has led to a deadlock between the state government and the Backward Classes Commission over whether to retain or exclude these castes. As a result, the controversial list is likely to remain unchanged in the survey form.Despite Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s government recommending the removal of these 46 castes, Commission Chairman Madhusudan Naik has reportedly refused to comply.
Naik clarified that the list was inherited from the previous Kantharaju Commission and was not introduced by the current commission, stating, “We did not add this list, so we cannot remove it.”Uncertainty persists regarding whether the survey form will include these 46 Christian castes. A meeting held on Friday at Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s home office saw extensive discussions on the issue, but no resolution was reached. What’s the Controversy? The caste survey, scheduled to begin on September 22, aims to facilitate the public in declaring their caste and sub-caste. To this end, the Backward Classes Commission released a list of castes, sub-castes, and religions, which includes the contentious 46 Christian castes.
