Bengaluru: Karnataka Chief Minister has given the green light to commence the caste census survey starting September 22. Following significant confusion between the Vokkaliga and Lingayat communities regarding the caste census, issues have now arisen concerning the classification of Brahmin sub-castes in the survey list. According to Dinesh Gundu Rao, several errors have been identified in the caste census list, and he has highlighted two major issues:
Separate Listing of Sub-Castes: The caste census list records Brahmins and their sub-castes under different serial numbers. For example, Serial No. 210 - Brahmin, Serial No. 1216 - Smartha Brahmin, Serial No. 477 - Hoysala Karnataka. Similarly, there is confusion regarding sub-castes like Madhwa Brahmin and Sri Vaishnava Brahmin. Various sub-castes of the same Brahmin community are listed under different serial numbers based on alphabetical order in English. Unconventional Classification: The inclusion of Hindu castes under Christian and Muslim religions in the census list has sparked objections. Gundu Rao called this classification illegal and unethical. For instance, Serial No. 209 - Brahmin Christian, Serial No. 883 - Brahmin Mujawar Muslim, Serial No. 1384 - Vyas Brahmin Christian. Such classifications are not only inconsistent but also legally invalid. If a person from the Brahmin caste converts to Christianity, their caste is recorded solely as Christian, and their previous caste is not retained alongside the new one. In Christianity, there is no such caste as Brahmin. A person identified as Brahmin must belong to the Hindu religion, as per legal provisions. The same applies to the other two classifications mentioned above. Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao has provided several suggestions to address these confusions. Firstly, the Brahmin caste should be listed under a single serial number. Subsequently, sub-castes should be recorded under separate serial numbers or using letters like A, B, C.
