A deadly outbreak of Naegleria fowleri, commonly known as the brain-eating amoeba, is spreading rapidly in Kerala. So far, 19 people have died, and 67 others have been infected. This amoeba thrives in stagnant water, lakes, and ponds. Symptoms include headache, fever, nausea, and vomiting. Although no cases have been reported in Karnataka, the state health department is on high alert. With proper precautions, there is no need to panic.

A rare and highly dangerous Naegleria fowleri (brain-eating amoeba) infection is spreading rapidly in Kerala, claiming 19 lives and infecting 67 people. Authorities fear the death toll may rise further.How Does the Infection Spread?The amoeba thrives in stagnant water, such as lakes, ponds, and poorly maintained water bodies. It enters the body through the nose during activities like swimming and travels to the brain, causing severe damage to the central nervous system, often leading to death.Symptoms of Infection.

Symptoms typically appear within 1 to 9 days of exposure and include:

  • Headache

  • Fever

  • Nausea

  • Vomiting

Preventive Measures

Situation in Karnataka

No cases of Naegleria fowleri have been reported in Karnataka so far. However, the state health department is on high alert. "There’s no need to panic. Taking preventive measures can help avoid the infection," says Dr. Suresh from K.C. General Hospital.
