Scammers use phone calls, fake official banking apps, websites, SMS, or WhatsApp to send APK files and trick victims. They entice customers with promises of redeeming unused card reward points or claiming festival cashbacks. To do this, they exploit the names of major private banks and other prominent financial institutions. Also Read: POCSO Case: Karnataka High Court to Hear Petitions by Former CM BS Yediyurappa and Others Challenging Cognizance Order Today
Once customers click on the links or download the APK files sent by the fraudsters, they become easy prey. Posing as bank officials over the phone, the scammers extract credit card details and OTPs under the pretext of rewards, transferring the money from the account in seconds.
A senior police officer told The New Indian Express that several people have already lost lakhs of rupees to this new tactic. Authorities advise against sharing OTPs, ATM PINs, CVV numbers, or bank details with anyone, and to report any online fraud by calling the cyber helpline at 1930.
