Central Government Takes Bold Steps for Disaster Management: Tasked with Swift Response System

To bolster disaster management, the Central Government has taken a significant step under the Disaster Management Act, 2005. On Tuesday, responsibilities for monitoring, early warning, prevention, mitigation, preparedness, and capacity building for various disasters were assigned to specific ministries and departments.

The Government of India has assigned specific disaster management responsibilities to various ministries, establishing a prompt and effective response system. Preparedness and early warning mechanisms have been significantly strengthened across the country.

To bolster disaster management, the Central Government has taken a significant step under the Disaster Management Act, 2005. According to the notification issued by the Government of India, designated ministries and departments will handle specific disasters, ensuring swift and effective response systems. The Ministry of Defence has been tasked with managing avalanches and oil spills. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare will handle biological disasters. The Ministry of Earth Sciences is responsible for disasters such as cold waves, cyclones, tornadoes, earthquakes, heatwaves, lightning, tsunamis, hailstorms, and heavy rainfall, with a particular emphasis on early warnings for cold waves.Also Read: Cricket: India vs Pakistan: Head-to-Head Records in All Cricket Formats: you Will be shock!

The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare will manage frost, cold waves, droughts, hailstorms, and pest attacks. The Ministry of Jal Shakti will oversee floods and glacial lake outburst floods. Apart from early warnings, urban flooding will be managed by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. Forest fires fall under the purview of the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change.

The Ministry of Mines has been assigned responsibility for industrial and chemical disasters, as well as landslides. Nuclear and radiological emergencies will be handled by the Department of Atomic Energy. The notification emphasizes that all designated ministries and departments must coordinate with relevant agencies and stakeholders to strengthen disaster preparedness and response nationwide.
