Karnataka High Court Adjourns Caste Census PIL Hearing to Tomorrow..

The court will resume the hearing tomorrow to continue examining the legal challenges to the survey.

The Karnataka High Court has adjourned the hearing of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) challenging the state's caste census to tomorrow, September 24. The court today heard intense arguments regarding the legal validity of the survey and the role of the Backward Classes Commission.

A bench comprising Chief Justice Vibhu Bakhru and Justice C.M. Joshi heard arguments on the social, educational, and economic survey of the state. After listening to the contentions, the court decided to postpone the matter until Wednesday.

During the proceedings, the High Court questioned the role of the Backward Classes Commission and heard arguments from the lawyers representing the petitioners who filed the PIL. Senior advocate Prabhuling Navadagi, representing the petitioners, began his arguments after submitting a brief written submission. He raised objections to the written arguments presented by the counsel for the Backward Classes Commission.

Navadagi argued that the state government lacks the constitutional authority under Article 342(A) to conduct a survey of all citizens to determine backwardness. He contended that the survey, being conducted under the Backward Classes Act, goes beyond the government's powers. He also highlighted that the survey, conducted through a digital app, involves collecting citizens' Aadhaar and mobile numbers with the help of GPS and electricity meter readers, which he claimed was a violation of constitutional provisions.
