The Karnataka State Legal Services Authority (KSLSA) has announced the recruitment of part-time legal volunteers (also referred to as "Adhikaara Mitras") across the state to assist in delivering legal services to the public. Selected volunteers will be engaged in front-office operations at legal services centers, awareness programs, and various legal activities, with an honorarium of ₹750 per day, as stated by District Sessions Judge and KSLSA Member Secretary H. Speaking at a press conference organized by KSLSA on Tuesday, Shetty elaborated, “As per the directives of the National Legal Services Authority, the objective of the part-time legal volunteer scheme is to appoint and train volunteers. He further explained, “Each Taluk Legal Services Committee can have 25-50 active part-time legal volunteers, while District Legal Services Authorities can have 50-100. In 2024, a total of 5,343 part-time legal volunteers were appointed across the state for a one-year term, which will conclude on November 20, 2025.”
Eligible candidates for the role of part-time legal volunteers include teachers, retired teachers, senior citizens, women, anganwadi workers, doctors, law students, self-help group members, retired soldiers, and individuals from various fields. The selection process will be overseen by the Principal District and Sessions Judges and Chairpersons of the District Legal Services Authorities at the district and taluk levels.
Shetty added, “Applications will be invited and accepted from local residents by the respective District or Taluk Legal Services Authorities. The selection committee will use its discretion to choose suitable candidates as part-time legal volunteers, with priority given to those from Scheduled Castes/Tribes and backward classes. Selected volunteers will be utilized for front-office duties at legal services centers, awareness campaigns, and various legal activities. He further noted, “Selected part-time legal volunteers will be involved in creating legal awareness, preventing child marriages, curbing drug trafficking, collecting information, facilitating Lok Adalat mediation, and addressing bonded labor issues. By appointing these volunteers at the district, taluk, and village levels, legal issues of the public can be resolved swiftly. Training for selected volunteers will be provided by organizations such as Outlawed India and other voluntary legal service groups.”
