Bengaluru: Renowned Saraswati Samman awardee litterateur S.L. Bhyrappa (SL Bhyrappa) has passed away. While receiving treatment at the Rashtrotthana Hospital in Rajarajeshwarinagar, Bengaluru, Bhyrappa (94 years old) succumbed to cardiac arrest today at 2:38 PM, sources said.
Afflicted by a brain ailment, S.L. Bhyrappa had left Mysuru and was undergoing treatment in Bengaluru.
His works, written in Kannada, have been translated into English and other Indian languages, earning him fame in the Indian literary world. His novels have seen multiple reprints, and in recognition of his contributions, the Government of India honored him with the Padma Bhushan award in 2023.
Born on August 20, 1931, in Santeshivara, Channarayapattana taluk, Hassan district, Bhyrappa received his primary education in Huttur itself.
He continued his high school and college education in Mysuru, topping his M.A. with a gold medal. He earned a doctorate from the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda for his major thesis titled "Truth and Beauty," written in English.
All of his novels have sparked discussions. Translated into English and several other Indian languages, Bhyrappa's novels have gained popularity. Works such as Gruhabhanga, Vamshavriksha, Nele, Sakshi, Nayi Neralu, Tabbaliyu Neenade Magane, Daatu, Dharma Shri, Parva, Bhitti, and others are particularly popular in Hindi and Marathi.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah expressed his grief on his X account:
"The news of the passing of S.L. Bhyrappa, a senior writer in the Kannada world, has brought sorrow. I pray for peace to his soul. With his endearing writing style, Bhyrappa had a vast readership; his demise has impoverished the literary world.
