Caste Census in Shivamogga: Challenges and Delays in Karnataka’s Social and Educational Survey

This survey aims to collect detailed data on caste, religion, education, and economic status.

The caste census, officially known as the Socio-Economic and Educational Survey, began in Karnataka on September 22, 2025, under the supervision of the Backward Classes Commission. This survey aims to collect detailed data on caste, religion, education, and economic status.

However, in Shivamogga district, the process has sparked widespread discussion and faced significant challenges, including confusion, opposition, and technical issues. While the census is being conducted statewide through house-to-house surveys by teachers and other staff, technical glitches in some areas of Shivamogga have hindered progress, making it difficult for enumerators to complete their tasks. These issues are not unique to Shivamogga; in several other regions, the survey has not even started. As a result, teachers have requested a postponement until after Dussehra to allow for better preparation. They have specifically urged authorities to delay the survey by 8 to 10 days to address the technical problems effectively.
