Koppal Resident Protests Against Socio-Educational Survey: Objects to Questions on Caste and Family

In Karnataka’s Koppal district, a resident has voiced strong opposition to the ongoing socio-educational survey conducted by the state government. Ramanna Mangalore from Ward No. 28 has refused to cooperate with the survey, submitting an eight-point letter to the authorities, alleging that the survey questions infringe on human rights and personal privacy.

The issue has sparked widespread debate across the state, with mixed public reactions to the survey. Initiated on September 23 by the Karnataka Backward Classes Commission, the survey aims to assess the social, economic, and educational status of backward classes in the state. The survey comprises over 60 questions, covering details such as the number of rooms in a household, sources of income, education levels, caste, and family particulars. However, Ramanna Mangalore’s protest has raised serious concerns about the survey’s methodology. In his letter to the officials, he expressed anguish, stating, “These questions cause me great pain. I refuse to participate in this survey.”In his eight-point letter, Ramanna specifically highlighted objections to questions 59 and 60, which inquire about the number of widows in the household. He remarked, “They ask how many rooms are in my house. Using the word ‘caste’ in public is unacceptable. Dharmasthala Case: Empower SIT, Ensure Justice - Girish Mattannavar

The letter has left officials stunned, and the survey has become a focal point of controversy in the state. The BJP has criticized the survey, labeling it a “calculated move” and alleging that the Backward Classes Commission is under external influence.
