Rajdeep Sardesai Defamation Case: Delhi High Court Orders ₹5 Lakh Compensation for Defamatory Tweet

The Delhi High Court has ordered Anurag Shrivastava, who posted defamatory tweets against TV Today Network and journalist Rajdeep Sardesai in connection with the broadcast of an interview with actress Riya Chakraborty, to pay ₹5 lakh in compensation to TV Today Network [TV Today Network vs. Anurag Shrivastava & Others].

In 2020, TV Today Network broadcast an interview conducted by Rajdeep Sardesai with actress Riya Chakraborty, following which defamatory tweets were posted against them.

The court, presided over by Justice Purushaindra Kumar Kaurav, ruled that the tweets were highly defamatory and ordered Shrivastava to pay ₹5 lakh to TV Today to compensate for the damage to its reputation. The court found that the allegations made by the defendant were baseless and condemned his irresponsible conduct despite being given ample opportunity to provide evidence. The September 3 order stated that ₹5,00,000 in damages was justified to address the harm to reputation, emotional distress, and professional credibility caused by the defendant’s actions. Shrivastava, using his Twitter handles '@theanuragkts' and '@theanuragoffice', posted tweets in 2020 targeting TV Today and Sardesai. The tweets were in response to the interview conducted by Sardesai with Riya Chakraborty. Shrivastava had called Sardesai a “pimp” and compared him to alleged terrorist Zakir Naik. He falsely accused Sardesai and India Today of accepting bribes from Chakraborty to conduct the interview, using the phrase “RIP 4th Pillar of Democracy” and the hashtag #ShameOnAajTak.YOHO Bubbles Men Ortho slippers | Soft comfortable and stylish flip flop slippers for Men in exciting colors |Lightweight | Anti Skid | Daily Use Chappal

TV Today argued that the tweets damaged its reputation and financial standing, citing a drop in revenue from ₹899.57 crore in 2019–20 to ₹819.92 crore in 2020–21 as evidence of the impact. Shrivastava eventually deleted the tweets and assured the court he would not repost them. In 2020, the court had issued an interim order restraining him from publishing such content. Now, the court has ordered him to pay ₹5 lakh in compensation to TV Today for the defamatory tweets.
