The stampede occurred during a rally organized by Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief and actor Vijay at Velusamipuram in Karur. Despite permission for 10,000 attendees, approximately 27,000 people gathered, leading to a loss of crowd control during Vijay’s speech, which triggered the disaster.
