Omar Abdullah Rules Out BJP Alliance, Says He’d Resign Over J&K Statehood Compromise

No Compromise on Principles: In a direct challenge to his party members, Abdullah said: "If you are ready [to ally with BJP for statehood], tell us. Because I am not. If it is needed to include the BJP in the government, then accept my resignation. Make any MLA here the chief minister and form the government with the BJP."

On September 30, 2025, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah firmly ruled out any political alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to expedite the restoration of statehood to the Union Territory, stating he would prefer to step down as CM rather than compromise on this front. Speaking at a public rally in Achabal, Anantnag district (south Kashmir), Abdullah addressed his National Conference (NC) party legislators and the public, emphasizing his commitment to democratic principles and regional representation without BJP involvement.

Key Highlights from Omar's Speech

  • The Dilemma Post-Election: Abdullah revealed that after NC's resounding victory in the recent Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections, he faced two clear paths:

    1. Form a coalition government including the BJP, similar to the PDP-BJP alliance in 2015-2018 (under Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and later Mehbooba Mufti). He noted this could have potentially accelerated statehood restoration as a "return gift" from the central government.

    2. Exclude the BJP entirely while ensuring balanced representation for Jammu region— a path he chose, appointing a deputy CM from Jammu without BJP participation.

He stressed, "I have never made the situation an excuse; despite that, I only know how difficult it is to work.Levi's Men's Slim Fit Mid Rise 511 Mid-Rise Jeans

No Compromise on Principles: In a direct challenge to his party members, Abdullah said: "If you are ready [to ally with BJP for statehood], tell us. Because I am not. If it is needed to include the BJP in the government, then accept my resignation. Make any MLA here the chief minister and form the government with the BJP." He added that he isn't seeking personal glory but won't allow the BJP to gain a foothold in J&K through his administration: "It may mean a longer wait, but I will never allow the BJP to enter government through us."Also Read: Contempt Plea Over Minimum Jail Facilities: Darshan's Lawyer Argues Disparity with Rapist Umesh Reddy's Privileges

Regional Representation Achieved: Abdullah highlighted how his government provided fair inclusion for Jammu and Pir Panjal regions without BJP support, countering past excuses for alliances. "Today, the deputy CM is from Jammu, without the BJP's inclusion."

Ongoing Struggle for Statehood: He vowed to continue the peaceful, democratic push for restoring J&K's statehood and Article 370 protections, drawing parallels to Ladakh's current protests. Initially, Ladakh welcomed the 2019 abrogation but now demands statehood and Sixth Schedule safeguards, validating NC's long-standing warnings. "There is no despair in God's court. We will get it, and we will get our rights. But for now, the work will continue."

Context: J&K's Political Landscape

Jammu and Kashmir lost its special status on August 5, 2019, when Article 370 was abrogated, bifurcating it into two Union Territories (J&K and Ladakh). The Supreme Court later directed elections and statehood restoration, leading to the NC-Congress alliance's victory in the 2024 polls. However, the Centre has delayed full statehood, fueling Abdullah's frustration. This statement comes amid ongoing negotiations, with Abdullah accusing the BJP-led government of failing to honor commitments.
