Gitanjali Angmo, the wife of environmental activist Sonam Wangchuk, has approached the Supreme Court seeking his release following his arrest in the wake of violent protests in Ladakh. She alleges that the process leading to his detention involved violations of the law.
Angmo has filed a Habeas Corpus petition challenging Wangchuk’s detention under the National Security Act (NSA), which followed clashes that erupted during a protest demanding statehood for Ladakh. Wangchuk was arrested two days after the incident.
Through her lawyer, Sarvam Reetam Khare, Wangchuk's wife has filed the application challenging the arrest. She alleges that she has not received a copy of the detention order and has been denied contact with him. In addition to challenging the NSA charges, the plea demands his immediate release.
Angmo claims that her husband's detention under the NSA is based on "illegal and unauthorized provisions" and constitutes a procedural violation. While he was formally arrested on September 26, she says she has not been allowed to meet or contact him since. The protest in Ladakh on September 24 turned violent, resulting in four deaths and several injuries. Wangchuk has been accused of inciting the protest and allegedly having links with a Pakistani PIO (intelligence officer). Amidst the legal battle, Angmo is also reported to have written to President Droupadi Murmu, requesting her intervention in the matter.
