BCCI Appoints Shubman Gill as India's New ODI Captain, Replacing Rohit Sharma

Rohit Sharma, 38, steps down after a stellar tenure as full-time ODI captain since December 2021, during which he led India in 56 matches, winning 42 (win percentage of 75%). His highlights include captaining India to the 2023 ODI World Cup final and the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy title. Rohit, along with Virat Kohli (who turns 37 next month), has been retained as a senior batter in the 15-member squad, marking their return to international cricket after a seven-month hiatus since the Champions Trophy in March 2025.

Ahmedabad/Mumbai: In a significant leadership transition, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has named Shubman Gill as the new captain of the Indian men's ODI team, succeeding Rohit Sharma. The 26-year-old opener will lead the side in the upcoming three-match ODI series against Australia, starting October 19 in Perth, with Shreyas Iyer appointed as his vice-captain. This move signals a strategic shift towards building a stable core for the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.

Key Details of the Announcement:

The decision was revealed by BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar during a press conference in Ahmedabad on October 4, 2025, alongside the squad announcement for the white-ball tour of Australia. Agarkar emphasized that the change was made in consultation with head coach Gautam Gambhir and BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia, aiming to give Gill ample time to settle into the role given the sparse ODI calendar. "We don't play too many ODIs, and we needed to give the next guy enough time," Agarkar noted, adding that Rohit was informed about the transition.TRASE Block Heels Sandals For Women, Dusky Stylish & Comfortable Footwear
