The popular tourist town of Mirik has suffered severe damage, with infrastructure destruction disrupting daily life. Darjeeling recorded 261 mm of rainfall in 24 hours, prompting Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi to express grief and assure assistance.

The popular tourist town of Mirik has been severely affected, suffering extensive damage to infrastructure and completely disrupting daily life. The situation is critical in Darjeeling, which recorded an "extremely heavy" 261 mm of rainfall in 24 hours. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have both expressed grief and promised assistance.

The disaster struck the hilly and plain regions of North Bengal from Saturday night to Sunday morning, leading to the devastating landslides, bridge failures, and flash floods. Reports indicate that at least 28 people have died in the tragedy, with the majority of the victims being residents of the tourist spot, Mirik. A number of people are still missing. The situation remains critical in the Darjeeling area, where rescue teams are conducting continuous operations.

Mirik Faces Extensive Damage -

The town of Mirik alone has recovered 13 bodies. This tourist destination is known for its beautiful Sumendu Lake and stunning views of the Kanchenjunga peak. In another tourist location, Himadri Purkayastha near Kolkata, 10 people are reported missing. Rescue teams have reached the high-altitude hill areas to conduct search operations. Authorities have warned that the death toll is likely to rise. Intensity of Rainfall -

The intensity of the rainfall was extreme: Darjeeling recorded 261 mm in 24 hours, categorized as "extremely heavy rain." Cooch Behar recorded 192 mm, and Jalpaiguri recorded 172 mm. Gazoldoba received a staggering 300 mm. The heavy rain has caused significant infrastructure damage. A key bridge connecting Siliguri and Mirik over the Balasan River has collapsed, leading to widespread chaos and disruption.

Government Response -

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee held an emergency virtual meeting and announced that she would visit the disaster-hit areas on Monday. All tourist destinations have been closed, and emergency helpline numbers have been released. The State Government has assured that it will bear the cost of the rescue and relief operations.
