Following the tragic serial deaths of children in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh linked to a contaminated cough syrup, the Karnataka government has issued an alert across the state. Health and Family Welfare Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao confirmed that the specific cough syrup has not been supplied in Karnataka and announced that the manufacture and sale of the implicated medicine have been prohibited.
The minister assured the public that the state government is prioritizing public health and safety by increasing drug control and lab surveillance activities.
Immediate Action Taken -
Speaking to the media today, Minister Gundu Rao addressed the alarming reports regarding the consumption of the 'Coldrip' cough syrup in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, which led to the loss of young lives.
"This horrific incident is shocking, and we have taken proactive steps in Karnataka," the minister stated. "Our state already ranks highly in drug sample testing. We have confirmed that the specific contaminated cough syrup was not supplied in our state." He further announced that the state would be releasing detailed guidelines regarding cough syrups and directed Drug Control officials to maintain strict vigilance over all such medicines.
Manufacturing and Sales Prohibited -
The minister confirmed that laboratory tests have validated that the drug was responsible for the fatalities. Consequently, the manufacture and sale of the implicated medicine have been prohibited statewide.
"As a precautionary measure, following the cases in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, we are conducting checks across the state," he said. "We have also instructed authorities to check if any individuals may have privately sourced this medicine."
Minister Gundu Rao emphasized that the government is serious about health security and is actively engaged in raising public awareness regarding safe medicine consumption. He also mentioned that related checks, such as those concerning mineral water manufacturing, would be conducted and action taken where necessary, urging the public to heed this as a critical health warning.
