Supreme Court Adjourns Sonam Wangchuk NSA Detention Case to October 14, Seeks Response from Centre and Ladakh UT.!

During the proceedings, the bench questioned the Central Government as to why the grounds for Wangchuk’s arrest were not communicated to his wife.

The Supreme Court on Monday directed the Central Government and the Ladakh Union Territory (UT) administration to respond to a petition filed by Geetanjali J. Angmo, the wife of activist and education reformer Sonam Wangchuk, challenging his detention under the National Security Act (NSA) following recent protests in Ladakh.

A bench of Justices Aravind Kumar and N.V. Anjaria adjourned the hearing of the plea, which seeks Wangchuk’s immediate release, to October 14, 2025. The court, however, declined to pass any immediate interim orders regarding the basis of his detention. During the proceedings, the bench questioned the Central Government as to why the grounds for Wangchuk’s arrest were not communicated to his wife.

Wangchuk was arrested on September 26, two days after violent clashes erupted during protests demanding Sixth Schedule status for the UT of Ladakh, which resulted in the deaths of four people and injuries to nearly 90 others.

In her petition, Angmo detailed that following his arrest, Wangchuk was moved from Leh to Jodhpur Central Jail in Rajasthan. She alleged that he was not allowed access to his family, personal belongings, or necessary medication during this transfer. Prior to approaching the Supreme Court, Angmo had written to President Droupadi Murmu seeking her husband's release. The petition names the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Ladakh UT administration, the Deputy Commissioner of Leh, and the Superintendent of Jodhpur Jail as respondents.

This legal battle underscores significant concerns over human rights and the alleged violation of constitutional rights related to detention without communication of charges. Also Read: Nepal Floods and Landslides Claim 52 Lives, Domestic Flights Temporarily Suspended
