Panaji, October 4, 2025 – Union Home Minister Amit Shah made a strong call for self-reliance on Saturday, urging India's 140 crore citizens to pledge this Diwali to avoid purchasing foreign-made products unless absolutely necessary, in a bid to boost the 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' initiative and propel the nation toward becoming "mahan" (supreme).
Speaking at a public meeting in St. Cruz near Panaji, Goa, Shah highlighted the swadeshi spirit as a collective resolve that could transform the economy. "On this Diwali, we all should resolve that we will not bring any foreign product, which is not made in our country, into our house unless it is essential," he said. He emphasized that if businesses commit to stocking only Indian-made goods and consumers follow suit, India could achieve rapid economic growth and address challenges like unemployment by fostering 'Make in India'.BULLMER Trendy Clothing Set with Shirt & Pants Co-ords for Men
The remarks came during the launch of the Goa government's 'Mhaje Ghar Yojana', a scheme granting ownership rights to lakhs of residents previously entangled in legal disputes over illegal structures. Describing it as a step toward empowerment, Shah praised Chief Minister Pramod Sawant’s administration and predicted Goa would achieve full development by 2035-37, well ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'Viksit Bharat' target for 2047.Also Read: Lawyer Arrested for Throwing Shoe at Supreme Court Chief Justice B.R. Shah also tied the swadeshi appeal to recent economic measures announced on Navratri's eve, noting Modi's decision to slash GST rates on 395 items by one-third. "GST has been reduced to nil on several food items and to five percent on daily essentials," he added, crediting Modi for bold reforms unmatched since independence.
Swadeshi Pledge: Avoid foreign goods this Diwali; buy only Indian products to make India "mahan". If traders and citizens unite, economic dreams will materialize quickly.
The event, attended by Goa CM Pramod Sawant, Union Minister Shripad Naik, and Rajya Sabha MP Sadanand Shet Tanavade, underscores the BJP's ongoing emphasis on local manufacturing amid festive consumerism. Shah's pitch echoes his earlier calls for 'Vocal for Local', as seen in 2020 when he stated that shunning imports could give India's economy a significant boost.
